Kanae Yamamoto (1882–1946) was the founding figure of the Sōsaku-hanga (creative print) movement in Japan — the artist who, in 1904, produced the first Japanese woodblock print entirely conceived, carved, and printed by a single artist. His fishermen, children, and village scenes broke decisively from the commercial ukiyo-e tradition and established the self-expressive print as a form of fine art. He is to Japanese modern printmaking what Cézanne is to modern painting.
