Kanō Hōgai (1828–1888) was the last great master of the Kanō school and a key figure in the Meiji revival of Japanese-style painting (Nihonga). Trained in the Kanō tradition but working in a period of radical cultural transformation, he developed a synthesis of classical Japanese and contemporary Western techniques that produced works of unusual power and drama. His Kannon Bosatsu and dragon paintings remain defining works of Meiji visual culture.
