Mount Fuji rises beyond a river crossing

Mount Fuji's snow-capped peak rises beyond a wooded spit and the broad mouth of the Tama River. A small boat carrying two figures crosses the water in the middle distance, while on the near bank a figure leads a horse loaded with cut brush along the shore. A cartouche at upper left names the site and series; the artist's signature sits just below it.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is the most widely known of all Japanese artists. Over a seventy-year career he worked under some thirty names, produced books, sketches and paintings by the thousand, and in his seventies designed the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including The Great Wave and Red Fuji, which reshaped landscape printmaking and later European art. He called himself the old man mad about drawing. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
