An orange moon over a fishing village and a woman with water pails

A full orange moon hangs in a deep blue night sky above the sea, a line of white surf breaking along the horizon. Thatched fishing houses in dark brown crowd the middle of the sheet, a mast with rigging rising among them, and a pale tidal stream winds between them to the sea past a footbridge and fence. Two small figures sit by barrels at the left. In the foreground a woman in blue with a white headscarf crosses the dark ground carrying two wooden pails on a shoulder pole.

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the defining landscape artist of shin-hanga, the movement that carried Japanese woodblock printing into the twentieth century. From 1918 he worked with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, travelling almost continuously through Japan and turning roadside sketches into prints of unusual atmospheric precision. Snow, rain and failing light were his real subjects, as much as any temple or harbour. In 1956 Japan recognised his woodblock technique as an Intangible Cultural Property. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
