A lone walker crosses a snow-covered village after the storm

Fresh snow lies over a farming village under a clearing sky. Thatched farmhouses carry thick white roofs, one with a lit window; a wooden fence runs between them and bare trees and dark pines stand behind. Rows of snow-capped haystacks line the fields to left and right. A single figure in a green coat with a red hood walks the muddy path towards the houses. The fields in the foreground are ruled with lines of stubble showing through the snow, and the sky grades from deep blue at the top down to a band of pink and lavender cloud along the horizon.

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the defining landscape artist of shin-hanga, the movement that carried Japanese woodblock printing into the twentieth century. From 1918 he worked with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, travelling almost continuously through Japan and turning roadside sketches into prints of unusual atmospheric precision. Snow, rain and failing light were his real subjects, as much as any temple or harbour. In 1956 Japan recognised his woodblock technique as an Intangible Cultural Property. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
