Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) was the first Japanese printmaker to systematically incorporate Western techniques of shadow, light, and perspective into the ukiyo-e tradition — earning the title of Japan's first modern printmaker. His views of Meiji Tokyo — gaslit streets, river fog, fireworks over the Sumida — have an atmospheric quality unlike anything in the earlier tradition, bridging the Edo world with the photographic realism of the new age.
