Lorenz Oken (1779–1851) was a German naturalist and philosopher of nature whose encyclopaedic Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände (1833–1841) included hand-coloured natural history plates of extraordinary precision and beauty. His bird egg illustrations are among the finest examples of 19th-century scientific illustration — each egg rendered with a jeweller's attention to surface texture, colouration, and form.
