Maynard Dixon (1875–1946) was an American painter and illustrator whose rugged portraits of the American West graced the early covers of Sunset and Overland Monthly magazines. Self-taught and prolific, he brought a modernist's economy of form to the Western landscape — strong silhouettes, saturated colours, and skies that feel larger than the earth beneath them. His magazine work predated his shift to easel painting but shows the same commanding vision: minimal, monumental, and fiercely beautiful.
