About Maynard Dixon
Maynard Dixon was an American painter who lived from 1875 to 1946 and is known above all as a painter of the American West. In 1920 he married the photographer Dorothea Lange, later famous for her pictures of the Great Depression. They had two sons, Daniel and John, and divorced in 1935.
Maynard Dixon painted the landscapes, people and history of the West. His large canvas Kit Carson with Mountain Men (1935), almost eight by fifteen feet, shows the frontier scout with his companions. The contemporary Western painter Charles Fritz has named Dixon among his favourite artists, admiring the way he simplified the shapes of nature.
Maynard Dixon prints: reproductions of paintings, magazine covers and illustrations by the American Western artist Maynard Dixon, made between 1895 and 1944. The collection includes Overland Monthly, June 1895, Sunset Magazine, Thanksgiving Number (1904), Pioneers (1912), Homeward Bound, Sandhill Camp (1921) and Palomino Ponies (1941).
This selection covers two sides of Dixon's work. The first is his early illustration: covers for Overland Monthly and Sunset Magazine from 1895 to 1904, and story illustrations of cowboys, riders and outlaws. The second is his later painting of the West, with horses, Native American subjects, desert camps and California hills in simplified shapes and warm, dry colours.
The landscapes and horse paintings suit living rooms, studies and cabins, and the vintage magazine covers work well in kitchens, hallways and home offices. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
