Owen Jones (1809–1874) was the most influential design theorist of the 19th century — the architect, designer, and writer whose Grammar of Ornament (1856) compiled the decorative vocabularies of 37 civilisations into a single encyclopaedic survey that transformed how Victorian designers understood pattern, colour, and ornament. His chromolithographic plates — Islamic geometric, Chinese floral, Pompeian arabesque — were the immediate source for the Arts & Crafts movement, the wallpaper industry, and the emerging science of applied design education.
