Lapis and gold illumination crowns the opening of the birds' journey

The Mantiq al-Tayr (Conference of the Birds, c.1177 CE) by the Persian Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar (c.1145–c.1221) is one of the supreme works of Sufi mystical literature — an allegory in which thousands of birds journey in search of their king, the Simurgh, and in finding him discover that they are themselves the divine they sought. Its illustrated manuscripts, particularly a celebrated 17th-century Safavid edition now partly held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, produced some of the most beautiful miniature paintings in the Persian tradition: jewel-bright birds in paradisiacal gardens, rendered with a visual intensity that fully equals the poem's spiritual ambition.
