On a strip of meadow between two panels of text, the bearded Brahman Uttanka, in an orange wrap and pink shawl, faces Indra in disguise: a grey-skinned figure with a white sash and turban, holding a long orange bow, a sword at his hip. Two leashed dogs, one white patched with black and one pale grey, and a white dog running free circle them. A dark river with four white water birds winds down the left past a tall leafy tree, and distant domes rise against a pale blue sky.
The original: a folio from a dispersed Razmnama (The Book of War), the Persian translation of the Mahabharata, opaque watercolour, gold and ink on paper, painted by Qasim in India, subimperial Mughal, 1616-1617; Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Qasim was a painter active in India in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, working for Abd al-Rahim, the Khan Khanan, commander of the Mughal army and a poet who kept his own library and painting workshop. He painted for Abd al-Rahim's illustrated Ramayana, now in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, and for a Shahnama and a Razmnama, the Persian translation of the Mahabharata, both of 1616–17; the Shahnama is in the British Library and leaves of the Razmnama are in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

What paper do you use?
Our principal fine-art papers include
Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm.
German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works
exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag
has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly
detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than
using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
What does “giclée” mean?
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and
high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations,
fine detail and tonal depth.
Will large prints still look sharp?
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying
artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and
prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival
works where source quality varies considerably.
What about your framed prints?
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Will the colours look exactly like my screen?
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical
to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for
print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece
a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
