Man spread inside the wheel of the world, an angel above

An engraved title page from Fludd's Utriusque Cosmi Historia. The upper half carries the Latin title and contents in fine roman type, framed by billowing engraved cloud; a small winged genius strides across the clouds at the right, drawing a cord. The lower half is given to the great diagram itself: a nude man stands spread-eagled at the centre of concentric rings inscribed Macrocosmus and Microcosmus, the bands around him lettered with the elements, humours and celestial spheres, so that the body and the cosmos are read as one measured instrument. Robert Fludd (1574–1637) was an Oxford-trained physician, Paracelsian, Rosicrucian apologist and cosmologist whose great illustrated volumes attempted to diagram the entire relationship between God, the cosmos and the human body. Kepler argued with him in print. His engravings remain the most beautiful visual arguments Hermetic philosophy ever produced.
