Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was Japan's greatest lacquer artist and one of the supreme painters of the Meiji era — a master who brought the refined techniques of urushi lacquerwork into paintings, prints, and illustrated books. His works — tigers, peonies, butterflies, crows — combine the luminous depth of lacquer surfaces with a painterly spontaneity that no Western medium can quite reproduce. Zeshin's prints are prized by collectors of both Japanese and world art.
