Maynard Dixon (1875–1946) was the defining painter of the American West — an artist whose images of desert landscape, Native American people, and cowboy culture combined modernist simplification with a deep documentary commitment to the landscape and peoples of the Southwest. His Sunset Magazine covers, produced in the early decades of the 20th century, brought his bold graphic style to a popular audience and established his visual language of the West as a cultural archetype.
