James Ward (1769–1859) was a British painter of animals, landscapes, and sublime nature scenes — an artist whose range extended from intimate animal studies to monumental canvases of Romantic grandeur. A member of the Royal Academy, he is best known for his great animal paintings and for Gordale Scar (c.1812–14), one of the most awe-inspiring Romantic landscapes in British art. His meticulous observation of natural specimens — butterflies, moths, and other creatures — reflects the same scientific-artistic intensity that characterised the greatest natural history illustration of his era.
