A dense brown wallpaper pattern of leaves, wild roses and butterflies

A dense, symmetrical wallpaper pattern fills the sheet in two tones of warm brown: pale tan leaves and small five-petaled wild-rose blossoms interlace across a darker ground, the vines mirrored into a repeating diamond-like lattice. Small butterflies perch among the leaves at intervals, including both upper corners. The design uses no other colour, reading as a continuous, all-over botanical repeat typical of a wallpaper design.

Theo Nieuwenhuis (1866–1951) was a Dutch designer who applied the Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch Art Nouveau, to many different media. Trained at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Kunstnijverheid and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, he drew plants and animals in a decorative style and designed printed matter, calendars, book covers, textiles, carpets, ceramics, furniture and complete interiors, including the Scheepvaarthuis in Amsterdam and passenger ships. With Dijsselhof and Lion Cachet he designed charters in 1892 that are counted among the first expressions of Nieuwe Kunst. His work is held by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the TextielMuseum and the Drents Museum.
