Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
An elderly man with a grey beard and pale eyes turns his head to the left and looks out, wearing a tall cap of gold pattern over a white linen cap. A cape of white ermine, spotted in black, falls over a golden-brown robe closed with a row of large gold buttons and a belt with a metal buckle. His open hand shows at the lower left. A crimson curtain hangs at the right against a near-black ground.
The National Gallery of Victoria notes that Pietro Loredano was elected Doge of Venice in 1567 at about 85 and served only three years, dying in 1570. Tintoretto, then nearing fifty, was among the leading painters in Venice. The museum acquired the portrait through the Felton Bequest in 1928, and lists an essay asking whether it is an earlier version of the portrait.
The original: oil on canvas, 1567-1570; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti, 1518–1594) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school, born and active in Venice, which he rarely left. Early biographers say he spent only a few days in Titian's studio; he was otherwise largely self-taught, drawing from models and from casts and prints. He painted large religious and mythological canvases with muscular figures, strong foreshortening and fast, bold brushwork, earning the nickname il Furioso. His major commissions include the Miracle of the Slave, the cycle for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Paradise in the Doge's Palace. His work is held by the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, the Museo del Prado and the Louvre.

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Unframed prints travel rolled in a protective tube. This is the standard and safest way to ship a print: a rolled sheet cannot be creased or have its corners knocked in transit. Framed prints arrive ready to hang.
Hahnemühle paper is very delicate. Its soft, textured matte surface marks far more easily than ordinary poster paper, so handle it with care. Wash and dry your hands first, or wear clean cotton gloves if you have them. Hold the sheet by its edges with both hands, and never touch the printed surface.
To flatten your print:
Frame your print behind glass as soon as you can, and keep it flat until then. Hang it out of direct sunlight and away from damp and heat, such as bathrooms and radiators. If it gathers dust, use a soft, dry brush; never water or cleaning products.
Unsure about anything? Any professional framer will know how to handle and flatten your print, and you can always write to us before you unroll it.
Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
