A green pine-covered hill rises from a strait, with a sandbar lined with pine trees leading to boats and a village on the far shore under a pink dusk sky. Below, an elderly woman with gray hair, seated in a brown kimono patterned with cream flowers, holds a round glass with a blue lens in a red-orange frame to her eye. Beside her a young figure in a checked outer robe and blue leg wraps carries a blue floral bundle, standing by a shallow woven basket with a coiled rope.
The Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes (1854–57) paired the two most popular print artists of late Edo: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), the landscape master of the Tōkaidō road, and Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), the leading designer of actor and figure prints. Each sheet sets a Kunisada figure — an actor, a beauty, a legendary character — before a Hiroshige view of the station behind. The series is held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
