An elderly woman with wild grey hair glances back over her shoulder, in a robe patterned with branches in blue, orange and tan. Beside her, a man in blue-and-red kumadori stage make-up wrestles with a large green robe bearing a four-square crest and a diamond pattern. Behind them, white birds fly low over crashing waves that break against dark rocks under a grey sky. Hiroshige's brushed signature and a red diamond seal sit on the sky; Kunisada's red cartouche and black seals sit at lower right.

The Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes (1854–57) paired the two most popular print artists of late Edo: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), the landscape master of the Tōkaidō road, and Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), the leading designer of actor and figure prints. Each sheet sets a Kunisada figure — an actor, a beauty, a legendary character — before a Hiroshige view of the station behind. The series is held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
