A warrior wrestles a leopard as arrows fly past

A bare-armed warrior grapples a spotted leopard, gripping its snout with one bare hand while arrows streak past overhead. Diagonal blue-grey lines mark falling rain behind them; a straw rain hat pierced by two arrows lies discarded at the lower left beside scattered reeds. The warrior wears a red under-robe with dark blue-green armour plates, his hair windswept. His signature sits in a small white panel at the left edge; a round seal and a rectangular publisher's seal are at the lower right.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) brought heroes, monsters and spectacle into the ukiyo-e print. A pupil of Toyokuni, he made his name in 1827 with the series of the One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, tattooed warriors caught mid-action, and went on to giant skeletons, cats, whales and satirical puzzles that slipped past the censors. His restless invention influenced Yoshitoshi and, much later, tattoo and manga art. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
