A young armored warrior rides a dappled horse into churning waves

A young warrior in richly patterned armour and a gilt horned helmet sits astride a white horse marked with grey rings, gripping its rein as it wades into churning teal waves, a bow slung across his back and a red cape billowing behind him. On the shore behind, beneath a wind-bent pine, a samurai on a brown horse wears a gilt horned helmet and a billowing striped cape. A cartouche at the upper right names the subject as Atsumori; the signature is in a red cartouche at the lower right.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) brought heroes, monsters and spectacle into the ukiyo-e print. A pupil of Toyokuni, he made his name in 1827 with the series of the One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, tattooed warriors caught mid-action, and went on to giant skeletons, cats, whales and satirical puzzles that slipped past the censors. His restless invention influenced Yoshitoshi and, much later, tattoo and manga art. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
