A young woman in a striped and dotted kimono with a coral-lined collar leans close to a large blue-grey cat, cupping its face in both hands as it looks up at her. Behind them a long wooden bridge crosses a river under a grey evening sky, dotted with small boats and lined with waterside buildings and a lighthouse-like tower. A vertical title cartouche at upper right reads the series title, with the place name Yokkaichi below it, beside the artist's red seal and signature. Fine crackle lines run through the pale background. Part of Kuniyoshi's genre series pairing figures with Edo-period night and travel scenes.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) brought heroes, monsters and spectacle into the ukiyo-e print. A pupil of Toyokuni, he made his name in 1827 with the series of the One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, tattooed warriors caught mid-action, and went on to giant skeletons, cats, whales and satirical puzzles that slipped past the censors. His restless invention influenced Yoshitoshi and, much later, tattoo and manga art. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
