A single worn boot beside its upright pair

One weathered leather boot lies on its side, sole facing outward and studded with rows of nails, its laces trailing loose across the ground. Its partner stands upright beside it, laces threaded through the eyelets. Both are rendered in dark brown and rust tones against a dark green-black background over a blue-grey floor. A signature reading 'Vincent .87' appears in the lower right corner.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
