Blue and pink cineraria blooms spill from a terracotta pot

Clusters of small blue, violet and pale pink cineraria flowers spill from a squat terracotta pot, half-hidden by broad pale-green leaves that curl, fold and fray like large paper fans. Thick ridges of paint trace the leaf veins, and the background behind is a dark, muted olive-brown. A red signature reading 'Vincent' appears in the lower left corner. Painted in 1886.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
