Twisted olive trunks stand over ground dotted with red flowers

Several gnarled, twisting olive trunks support dark blue-green foliage rendered in curling strokes. Small red flowers dot an orange-brown ground built from dabs of green, blue and white, with low green hills and a hazy pale sky beyond. The trunks and ground are worked throughout in short, layered brushstrokes typical of the orchard studies Van Gogh painted around Saint-Rémy.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
