A peasant woman, seen from the side, sits peeling a potato with a small knife held in both hands. She wears a pale striped bonnet and a dark shawl over her shoulders, her skirt falling in heavy grey-brown folds. The scene is rendered almost entirely in browns and greys, with light falling only on her hands, cap and face against a shadowed interior. The brushwork is heavy and directional throughout.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
