The sitter's head is closely cropped, almost shaved, set against a flat mint-green background. He wears a dark olive-brown coat with a blue collar and a small round pin at the throat, over a white shirt. His gaze is level and steady, eyebrows drawn together. Thick horizontal brushstrokes build the green ground, while the coat is worked in longer diagonal strokes. Painted in 1888, dedicated to Paul Gauguin.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
