A close portrait beneath a wide straw hat

Van Gogh looks out from beneath a wide-brimmed straw hat, its crown built from loose diagonal strokes of yellow, green and ochre. His red-gold beard and moustache are laid in with short flicks of colour, and his blue eyes meet the viewer directly. He wears a blue-grey jacket over a white collar. Behind him, short crosshatched strokes of salmon-pink, grey and pale blue radiate outward across the background. Painted in Paris in 1887.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
