A crowded ballroom glows beneath rows of hanging lamps

A packed hall is rendered in flat shapes of colour: women with their backs turned, in dark bonnets and blue-black dresses, fill the foreground, while more figures in hats gather further back. A green upper gallery is strung with rows of glowing yellow globe lamps beneath an orange-trimmed railing; a man in a red cap stands at right. Painted in Arles in December 1888, showing a public ball at the Folies-Arlésiennes dance hall.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
