A golden wheatfield scattered with blue cornflowers

A dense field of golden wheat, streaked with green and touched by scattered blue cornflowers, fills the lower half of the canvas. Green foliage rises at the left edge, and distant blue-violet hills run along the horizon beneath a pale turquoise sky filled with sweeping, wind-blown clouds. Painted in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
