Walter Gropius (1883–1969) was the founder and first director of the Bauhaus — the architect and educator who created the most influential art school in history. Before and after the Bauhaus (1919–1928), he was one of the pioneers of modern architecture, responsible for landmark buildings in Germany, England, and the United States.
