A bare, long-haired figure, its pale body outlined in deep blue, flies to the right across a gold-toned ground, its hair and a trailing blue scarf streaming behind it in wind-blown curves. Both hands are open with fingers spread, one stretched back behind, the other held before the body. Two pale discs, like moons, sit in the upper corners within a decorative border. A lettered caption bands across the base of the sheet, and a pencil inscription beneath names the month of November.
Willem Arondéus (1894–1943) was a Dutch artist and writer who designed calendars, posters and tapestries before joining the resistance. Trained in decorative painting at the Quellinus school in Amsterdam and an admirer of Richard Roland Holst, he painted a mural for Rotterdam City Hall in 1923, illustrated poems by Leopold, Boutens and Nijhoff, and wove nine tapestries of North Holland's municipal arms for the provincial hall in Haarlem. After helping to bomb the Amsterdam population registry in 1943 he was executed. His work is held by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Dutch Resistance Museum and Het Nieuwe Instituut.
