John Henry Dearle (1859–1932) was William Morris's most gifted assistant and eventual creative successor at Morris & Co. — the designer who, more than any other, carried the Arts and Crafts tradition into the 20th century. Trained entirely within the Morris workshop, he rose from errand boy to artistic director, designing tapestries, wallpapers, textiles, and stained glass of exceptional quality. His Compton (1896) and Cherwell wallpapers achieve a naturalistic intricacy and botanical refinement that place him firmly in the first rank of Victorian decorative designers.
