A dark-bearded man stands full length against crimson curtains in a scarlet dressing gown that falls to the floor. White ruffles show at his throat and at both cuffs. His right hand rests at his chest with the fingers spread, and his left sits at his hip on the red cord belt, which is knotted at the front with a long tassel hanging down. He looks off to his right. A pale slipper embroidered in silver-white and red peeps from under the hem onto the crimson floor; the signature and date run along the top right.
The sitter is Samuel Pozzi (1846-1918), a Parisian gynaecologist and art collector, painted not among the instruments of his profession but at home in a dressing gown. It was Sargent's first large portrait of a man. Sargent chose not to show it in Paris; it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in London in 1882 under the title A Portrait, the first of his works to be shown in London.
The original: oil on canvas, 1881, signed and dated at the upper right, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (The Armand Hammer Collection).
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the leading portrait painter of his generation, born in Florence to American parents and trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran. The scandal of Madame X drove him to London in 1884, where he painted the aristocracy and the great merchant families for two decades before abandoning commissioned portraiture in 1907 for watercolour, landscape and mural work. He travelled constantly — Venice, the Alps, Spain, the Middle East, Florida — painting in oil and watercolour with a bravura touch that was widely imitated and never matched. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Tate and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
