An inverted triangle descends from a gold disc

A flat gold disc sits high on a ground shading from grey-white to soft pink, crossed by three long pointed ellipses drawn in blue, pink, cream and green. Below, a large triangle points downward, its interior dark and ruled into narrow steps by white lines, with gold diagonals converging on the apex. A tapering pale band of gold scrolls runs down its centre, and the tip breaks into a sliver of rainbow. Deep red fills either side above a band of slate.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
