Two faceted hooks turn on flat vermilion

Flat vermilion carries two long hooked bands set in rotation. The upper, edged pale blue, curves from the top right to a point ending in a white dot and black tip; the lower, edged yellow, finishes at a black upright and crossbar. Both are ruled into faceted panels by gold and red-brown lines. At the left a grey-white crescent narrows into a black brushed tail, set with a circular fan — dark brown above, white below, rimmed with dotted arcs.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
