Nasreddine Dinet (1861–1929) was a French painter who, more than any of his Orientalist contemporaries, chose to live among the people he painted — settling permanently in the Algerian oasis town of Bou Saâda, converting to Islam, and taking an Arabic name. His paintings of Algerian women, children, and village life have a warmth, intimacy, and psychological honesty that sets them apart from the theatrical Orientalism of the Paris salons. Dinet is now considered both a major Orientalist painter and an important figure in the cultural history of Algeria.
