Harada Naojiro (1863–1899) was a Meiji painter who studied in Munich and became one of Japan's most ambitious synthesisers of Western academic painting and Buddhist iconography. His masterpiece Bodhisattva Kannon on a Dragon (1888), painted in Munich, hangs in the Gunma Museum of Art and remains one of the most extraordinary cultural artefacts of the Meiji encounter with Western art — a Buddhist subject rendered with European academic grandeur.
