A stepped pyramid climbs a black ground toward a gold sun

A broad triangle rises from a black ground to a small apex beneath a flat gold disc. The disc is ringed with deep green set with spearheads of yellow, pink and blue, then a wide arc of pale lavender. The triangle is ruled into steps, each divided into columns shifting from red and orange through ochre to blue and violet. Gold ovals filled with fine radiating lines run down the centre on dark green. A red-brown band closes the foot.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
