A pale spiral uncoils on deep blue

On deep blue a spiral of pale yellow loops winds inward to a small orange core. A chain of overlapping green rings curves down from the upper left, passes round the spiral and trails to the lower right, with a tighter orange zigzag running beside it toward the centre. Fine pale lines radiate outward into the blue, which shows the grain of the board through the paint.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
