A crowded white disc hangs a pale pod on cornflower blue

A white disc almost fills a cornflower ground, packed with overlapping circles — olive and near-black ovals ringed in gold and blue, a yellow field with blue spirals, grey-lavender spheres, a navy oval banded with pale arcs, a deep blue one ringed in green. Two small lettered emblems face each other across the middle. White uprights and a horizontal rule the disc into a grid, and a pale pink pod hangs below, latticed and holding two white balls.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
