Paired rosettes fade down a coral ground

The ground moves from pale pink through coral to brick red, brushed loosely enough to show the strokes. Two discs sit side by side at the top, each filled with a lattice of fine pink lines and rimmed with scalloped petals. Below, two cream forms each hold a pair of overlapping ovals meeting in a lens, then two smaller ovals each split by one diagonal. Two dark commas face one another, and two thin circles enclose blue and yellow discs at the foot.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
