Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was the preeminent Sōsaku-hanga (creative print) artist of the 20th century and one of the great Japanese printmakers of any era — an artist whose self-carved, self-printed woodblocks achieved a level of technical and atmospheric mastery unequalled in the tradition. His India series — prints made during his travels through the subcontinent — brought to Japanese printmaking a new subject: the temples, rivers, and human presence of South Asia, rendered with the same lyrical precision he brought to Mount Fuji and the Japanese countryside.
