A large stylized black bird with a sage-green throat and a long curved beak looms against a cream ground, four silk neckties — orange, pink, red and gold — draped over its beak. Bold black-and-green lettering across the base names the firm Hermanns & Froitzheim. The artist's signature, 'Klinger', appears at the lower right, with a small printer's credit at the lower left.
Julius Klinger (1876–1942) was a Viennese illustrator and commercial artist known internationally for his posters. After drawing for Wiener Mode and the Munich weekly Jugend, he worked in Berlin until 1915, developing with the printers Hollerbaum und Schmidt a functional poster style of flat colour and pointed wit. After the war he ran a studio for commercial art in Vienna. Persecuted as a Jew, he and his wife were deported to Minsk in 1942 and murdered at Maly Trostinec. His posters are held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Poster Museum at Wilanów.
