Two women lean close together. The one behind wears her long hair loose, gathered in a simple topknot, and reaches toward her companion's hair; a red lacquer box stands beside her. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is the most widely known of all Japanese artists. Over a seventy-year career he worked under some thirty names, produced books, sketches and paintings by the thousand, and in his seventies designed the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including The Great Wave and Red Fuji, which reshaped landscape printmaking and later European art. He called himself the old man mad about drawing. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
