Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) is the supreme master of Shin Hanga landscape printmaking — the artist whose images of rain-drenched temples, snow-covered shrines, and moonlit harbours became the defining visual expression of 20th-century Japanese lyrical art. Designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government in 1956, he produced over 600 prints across a career of extraordinary consistency and beauty. His works are now among the most avidly collected objects in Japanese art, held in the Library of Congress, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and museum collections worldwide.
