A woman holds a long hairpin and a rolled paper at her chest
Kitagawa Utamaro — Habit of Showing the Hairline | Japanese Woodblock Print (Ukiyo-e)
Note: Framed prints require slightly longer production time
A woman with a tall black coiffure and a large pale-yellow ornamental comb holds a long slender hairpin in one hand at her chest and a rolled paper in the other. She wears a black outer robe over an inner layer patterned with pale coral roundels on cream. A vertical cartouche at upper right carries the series and print titles, with the artist's signature in a column at left and a square seal beneath it.
Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753–1806) defined the ukiyo-e portrait of women. Working with the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō in the 1790s, he introduced the ōkubi-e, or large-head print, which brought the viewer close enough to read a glance or a gesture, and he gave the beauties of the Yoshiwara district individual faces and names. Mica grounds, transparent textiles and fine line work made his prints the most refined of their day. His work is held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
