Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806) was the most celebrated bijinga artist of the Edo period — the printmaker who elevated the portrait of beautiful women to a form of psychological portraiture. Working with publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō, he developed a close-up compositional style — the ōkubi-e or large-head print — that captured the individual presence, mood, and inner life of each subject. His prints are among the most sought-after ukiyo-e works at major auction houses worldwide.
