Léon Belly (1827–1877) was a French Orientalist painter who travelled to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria in the 1850s, producing some of the most powerful landscape and genre paintings of the Orientalist movement. His Pilgrims Going to Mecca (1861) is considered one of the masterpieces of French 19th-century painting. His desert and wildlife scenes — gazelle hunts, caravan crossings, Nile landscapes — have an epic scale and atmospheric authenticity that set them apart from the studio-bound productions of many of his contemporaries.
